The Underbosses of Asteros

In the final instalment in our series on those behind Rising 5 we meet up with Kevin Kim, owner of Mandoo Games and an early partner of Gary And Evan in the development of the project. As well as a look at his background, Kevin also gives us a more detailed look at the application and how you can use it in the game!

That’s not the end of it though. In the same way that Gary and Evan wanted to give you guys a surprise after Essen, well, Kevin wanted to do the same! So, as it turns out, you all now have 3 new additions to thank the Essen-goers for!

“The Moth” is a nickname given to the boss of the shady underworld syndicate that controls the flow of black market silk through the universe. As you can imagine, his rise to power was not a pretty affair and his ruthless tactics have kept him in power ever since and a thorn in the council’s side. Despite this though, he’s also a savvy and eccentric individual who knows an opportunity when he sees one. It’s only natural that word soon reached his ears about Asteros not long after the Rising 5 departed. Apart from the vast reserves of Silk that had built up on the planet, this was a prime opportunity to gather especially corrupted specimens, artifacts and any other information that could be gleamed from the now partially active Gate. All of which could fetch a hefty price with the right buyers… Acquiring them won’t be an easy job but luckily enough there’s already a group of rather talented individuals already present. All he has to do is make them realise that working with him is to their benefit…or their extreme detriment should they refuse…

In the game The Moth represents an alternative “mission” mechanic that you can add at will to make the game more difficult or simply vary the challenges a bit. When the game begins, a “request” card is drawn that represents The Moth’s current demands. Now this can range from collecting monster bodies (after defeating them) to donating silk or artefacts. You have until the next red moon card is drawn from the action deck to complete The Moth’s request. Those that do will see how just how benevolent this interstellar crime lord can be as he can reward them with Silk, Artefacts, action cards or even by helping out with the eclipse track. Fail however, and the consequences will pose more than a hindrance to our heroes…

As with the other two “Operation Essen” freebies, The Moth will be added to both pledge levels!

Enjoy!

Double Edged Sword
over 7 years ago – Tue, Oct 25, 2016 at 11:53:44 AM

Ah, Stretch goals, always a nice thing to wake up to on a Sunday morning !

This time we a set of crisis cards for you! All of our heroes have been exposed to silk in one way or another and as much as it has bestowed upon them powers that have aided them in their mission thus far, each one of them is aware of just how much of a double edged sword these powers can be. For many years the silk on Asteros has been building up to this critical point and now, with so much on the line, the source of their powers could become their undoing and each member or the Rising 5 knows that even the slightest overexposure could spell the end for them. It is a risk they take gladly though as there is too much at stake to back out now!

In the game, Crisis cards represent a hero’s weak point, a chink in their armour that once the silk finds its way inside they are forced to abandon their mission and face their inner demons, luckily though, they can count on their team mates for aid. These crisis cards are mixed into the action card deck and, when drawn, lock the character down, leaving them unable to do anything as they confront their own personal struggles. The character remains a such until another hero arrives and spends an action to snap them out of it!

Next up we have some bigger and tougher monsters for you!

Finally, Vincent got back to us yesterday with the finished artwork for the character relics! With each character harnessing the power of ancient relics or the runes themselves to give you an extra edge during the game! Let us know what you think!
